Summertime Activity Ideas for Children and Parents to Enjoy Together

For parents and carers across Devon, here’s some great activity ideas for children and young people to do during the summer holidays!

There will be many children and young people who are less active during the holidays, and as a family you may be wondering what to do.

To help, we’ve put together the following activity ideas, top tips, local places to explore and fun things to do throughout the summer!

Active Devon’s Free Let’s Move Summer Challenge 2023

Take part in our free fun summer challenge to help get you, your family, and friends moving more throughout August. Buddy up and create a group of between three and ten of your Devon based family and friends and try to each do a minimum of 26 minutes of activity every day. To help with the challenge, we will be giving you lots of great ideas to make the most of your holiday time and keep active too. There’s also lots of prizes to be won!

NHS – Change 4 Life

The NHS has teamed up with Disney, Pixar and Marvel to bring you brand new play-along games inspired by your favourite characters.

The National Trust

The National Trust has a whole range of fun ideas and exciting outdoor activities for children and families. From joining in with favourite family summertime challenges to building the best den ever using top tips and tricks, there’s plenty to explore and enjoy!

The PE Umbrella

Although designed for teachers and some elements are for a paid subscription, there are lots of ideas for games that parents might want to try out this summer.

The Boing PlayUp Club

Free to access, the Boing PlayUp Club is a six-week video series full of new games and loads of different ways to play. It also includes tips, advice and ideas for children and parents/guardians on how to power up their play this summer.

Cosmic Kids Yoga

If you like the idea of yoga but don’t want to pay until you are sure it is right for you why not try Cosmic Kids Yoga on YouTube.  It is free to access on here and there is an app for your mobile phone if you don’t mind a small charge.

Living Streets

The walk to school campaign materials has some excellent ideas for engaging children in activities on route to school that will work equally well on other walks. This could include fun and enjoyable walks to the shops or the local park. The free activity booklet includes 14 sets of activities for families and primary school-aged children.
