Devon Games to Inspire 2012
Mid Devon has won the overall team title at the Devon Games to Inspire 2012. Youngsters from the district were crowned champions after the final results from a day of competition in 14 different sports were compiled. Plymouth were runners up and East Devon / Exeter and North Devon / Torridge teams shared third place.
East Devon’s name will appear on the Spirit of the Games Trophy for the third year in a row. They combined with Exeter to win the fair play award ahead of the South Hams with Mid Devon third. More than 1,200 children aged between seven and 16 from across the county took part in the event at Okehampton.
They competed at indoor athletics, badminton, basketball, cricket, dance, gymnastics, hockey, netball, football, table tennis, tag rugby, tennis, triathlon and volleyball. Dozens of youngsters also took part in a dance workshop and performed a specially-choreographed routine at the closing ceremony.
Sharp showers throughout the day didn't dampen the enthusiasm and excitement of the teams although the weather did claim one casualty. The street sports competitions - BMX, skateboarding and freestyle scootering - were cancelled due to safety concerns after heavy rain left parts of the arena under water.
The Devon Games To Inspire (formerly the Devon Youth Games) focus on community involvement and have been held every year since 1999. It's become one of the most popular dates on the county's youth sport calendar.
The event forms part of the School Games programme - an Olympic and Paralympic legacy project aimed at inspiring more young people to get involved in sport.
Matt Evans, chief executive of Active Devon, the organisation which helps more people in the county get active, said: "It's fantastic to see so many young people taking part and really enjoying themselves. They all come together in a spirit of competition, fair play and friendship and the atmosphere is incredible. It makes you very proud to know that Devon can put on an event as special as this."
