Step into Sport
Step into Sport forms part of the Governments Physical Education and Sports Strategy for Young People (PESSYP). Launched on 1 April 2008, Leadership and Volunteering is one of the PESSYP strategy’s ten work strands, supporting targets to get more young people involved in leadership and volunteering.
Step into Sport is central to this, its overall aim being to increase the quantity, quality and diversity of young people engaged in leadership and volunteering, with benefits to schools, clubs, the community and the young people themselves.
As part of the Step into Sport programme each School Sport Partnership is responsible for running a Leadership Academy. This is a programme of sports and leadership training offered to selected students aged 14-19. The Leadership Academies provide high quality support and development for young leaders and volunteers, offering a range of sport specific qualifications, generic leadership training, and other developmental workshops. Volunteering and leadership can take place within many settings e.g. school activities, school/club links, events at inta/inter, county and national events such as the UK School Games and supporting many voluntary organisations within the community e.g. local sports clubs.
Volunteers/Leaders:
- Are you a member of your local sports club and interested in being part of this programme?
- Are you already helping out but not involved in this programme?
- Do you know of someone within your Club that would be willing to support you throughout your involvement in this programme?
If you’ve answered yes to any of the above then in the first instance please mention this programme to someone within your club and, then ask the club to make contact with the National Governing Body Development Officer on your behalf so that they are aware of your interest. Finally have a word with your PE Teacher or School Sports Coordinator.
